  • Nicholas Kristof Opening Address at Northwestern Conference on Human Rights 2008

Posted by admin on January 12th, 2009 and filed under northwestern community college | No Comments »

This year, the Conference topic is Globalization and the Universality of Human Rights. Speakers will examine the impact of globalizing forces on the tension between cultural relativism and the universality of human rights in four key areas: multinational corporations, cultural/religious issues, health, and international justice. Student delegates will be encouraged to consider issues such as the homogeny and hegemony of human rights: are human rights becoming universal and, if so, whose values determine the basis of their definition? The topic has a broader focus than those in the past and is designed to be more appealing to and appropriate for an undergraduate audience with varying backgrounds and interests.

Will a C in AP English first semester senior year affect my college admissions with private universities?

Posted by admin on January 12th, 2009 and filed under northwestern community college | 2 Comments »

I've done fairly well at school. My weighted gpa is at a 4.1 and unweighted 3.75. I know that UCs don't take first semester senior year grades into great consideration. But how will getting a C in AP English affect my college admission decision? (THE UCS AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS LIKE NORTHWESTERN, RICE, USC, NYU) I've gotten A's in all my English classes and i am a member of the journalism staff. My other grades for the semester is 2 A's, 2 B's, potentially the C in AP English and an A in a social psychology course I took at community college.

It is EXTREMELY unlikely that college admissions will look at your individual grades. They will look at your final GPA as well as your activities, volunteer work, and SAT/ACT scores.

College Degree while still in High School?

Posted by admin on January 10th, 2009 and filed under northwestern community college | 6 Comments »

I am a Sophmore in High School and I want to be a Anesthesiologist. My mom and I talked about it and we think that it'll be nice if I attend an online college class this fall, and go to our community college for summer classes. Although this sounds like a good idea, we cannot find to see if Northwestern University will accept the college classes and if it's even possible to enroll while I'm only 15.
    Thank you!
-I think this will be a good idea for me because to become an Anesthesiologist, it takes 12 years of training, and I was hoping to cut down on the years.

Your state may have a program in which you can attend community college courses while in high school for free or at a reduced price. I doubt that you will be able to transfer credits from an online college to a four-year brick and mortar school, but there's no harm in asking.

Could I get into Northwestern U?

Posted by admin on January 6th, 2009 and filed under northwestern community college | 7 Comments »

I have a 3.6/3.7 unweighted cumulative GPA, and tons of extracurriculars that display continuity. My ACT composite score is 28, and I've taken two SAT subject tests (and will be taking them again). I have quite a few strong recommendations, and I've taken 7 college courses at the local community college; additionally, I have taken about 8 AP/Honors classes throughout high school–I've done decently (mostly A's).
I do however have weak points in my high school transcript, i.e., my sophomore year. I had a few C's.
    My college transcript–and I’ve taken legitimately difficult classes–is a 3.8.
And I'm an avidly good essay writer.

What are my chance of getting into Northwestern, and/or the below listed schools?
P.S. I'm about to be a high school senior.

    Northwestern U
    NYU
    Sarah Lawrence College
    Wesleyan University (Connecticut)
    Eugene Lang New School
    UC Berkeley
    Boston University
    Emerson College

    Thank you!

I know it's a lot, but I'd appreciate any answers at all.
Sorry, I made an error with my unweighted GPA. It's actually 3.4/3.5 unweighted. Bleh. 3.6/3.7 weighted.

3.5 unweighted is secure for most of those schools, with the exception of UCB, Northwestern and Wesleyan. However, your GPA is still good enough that it's not going to immediately rule you out, especially since you challenged yourself a lot.
Northwestern U is tough for everyone! They reject some very qualified applicants so even if you don't get in, don't feel bad.
Do your essays well. They are extremely important. You skills as an essayist will help you out a lot but take them very seriously and don't be cliche (that's very important). Your ACT is OK, just retake it and you'll do better, but it (like your GPA) isn't an automatic rejection. If your EC's are unique, you have a good chance, except if you like UC Berkeley a lot. They don't care about ECs too much… just damn good grades and SAT/ACT scores.

Can I apply to Northwestern Univeristy as a Transfer student with 40 credits and not summit ACT/SAT scores?

I have a GED and I am attending a community college

I think you can apply and get in. It depends on your major. You're best off if you want to get into a program that isn't one of the most popular.

You can get in as a student-at-large, do well for a semester and then since you've proven yourself, get officially into your program.

Does it matter what undergraduate college i attend if i want my MBA?

Posted by admin on January 2nd, 2009 and filed under northwestern community college | 3 Comments »

I am attending a college to get an accounting degree, but i want to attend a top MBA program like UCLA, Northwestern, or Berkeley. The college i am attending is a State college in california because of financial reasons. I am doing well so far in school: i maintained a 4.0 GPA thus far, worked, and will be doing community services and joining clubs to further my chances of being accepted. I was wondering will these top business school care where i went for my bachelor's degree, or do other things like academics, GMAT, etc. matter most?
    Thanks for opinions and advice

Your GPA, GMAT, and work experience is more important. But if you're tied with another person with similar stats but that person goes to better school, that person gets in. Work experience is a must.
